Richard gained his BA Hons in Media and Design in 1995 and his Masters in Cultural and Critical Theory in 2000. He started his career in advertising as a graphic designer and producing illustrations for the Chelsea Flower Show.
He is represented by the White Knight Art Agency and expresses his passion for the natural environment with modern works and landscapes that mirror the vibrance and holism embedded in nature, prioritising feeling and experience to counter the subversive and disjointed zeitgeist of the avante-garde.
He was invited to participate in Sky's "Landscape Artist of the Year" in 2019 and reached the finals of the British Art Prize in 2024. His work has also appeared in the Sussex Life magazine and the New Zealand "Listener". More recently, Richard's work has been acquired by The National Trust and The Wetland Trust.
His belief is that art is a shared experience and that an artist should be interested in the emotional integrity of his work. Art should awaken the senses and give something to the viewer, whether it is aesthetic or experiential.
Kelsang Pawo, joint founder of White Knight Art, has collected the art of Richard Potter over many years. Indeed, he has in his home, a Richard Potter room. When asked why he chose to collect Richard's works, he replied: "If you met Frederick Waugh, Canaletto, Andrew Gifford, or John Turner, would you not collect their works? There is a distinct comparison between these artists you know." "Richard has been recognised by the National Trust and Wetlands Trust as a modern day master. An example of his work will soon be part of the Petworth House art collection among those of Rubens, J. M. Turner and others."
